G&W coal September carloads fall more than 20% on-month due to maintenance outages

15 Oct 2014

Genesee & Wyoming's car loadings for coal and coke shipments in September dropped more than 20% from August due largely to maintenance outages at three different facilities in its Midwest and Central regions, the railroad holding company said Tuesday.

Car loadings in September totaled 24,191, down 22.2% from 31,089 in August, the company said.

Of the three maintenance outages, two occurred in the Midwest and one in the Central region, said Thomas Savage, vice president of corporate development and treasurer for the Darien, Connecticut-based company.

Each of the facilities is either back up or expected to be back up shortly, Savage said.

Compared with the year-ago month, carloads dipped 16.1%, halting eight months of year-over-year growth fueled largely by thermal coal shipments to electricity producers in the Midwest and Ohio Valley regions.

Year-to-date, the carrier has hauled 262,715 coal and coke carloads, up 9.2% from the year-ago period, according to the company.
