Govt may force CIL to open grievance mechanism

20 Jan 2015

January 20: The government may force Coal India Ltd (CIL) to open a grievance redressal mechanism to protect the interest of all its customers, Secretary (Coal) Anil Swarup has said.

The comments from Swarup came in response to a suggestion by a consumer that CIL is operating like a monopoly supplier and there is no grievance mechanism in the company to complain against the quality of coal supplied by the company to small consumers.

“I was under the impression that it (grievance redressal mechanism) was already there, but I will cross-check and we will have that in place,” Swarup said.

He added that there is no second opinion that there has to be a transparent grievance redressel mechanism and access at the highest level should be available to all the users.

“If you are esteemed consumers, your interest has to be definitely looked into,” Swarup said.

On a suggestion to form the committee with non-CIL officials on board, the Secretary (Coal) said, “Sometime you want everything and you get nothing and that’s the whole problem here.”

“I think the point is very well taken and there has to be a grievance redressal mechanism and may be in the second stage we will consider what you are saying (forming a committee with non-CIL officials),” he added.
