Railways’ Jan coal handling edges up 0.04% m-o-m

February 16: Indian Railways (IR) transported 48.93 million tons (mt) of coal in January 2015, up 0.04% from 48.91 mt handled in December 2014, according to information available with ICMW.

Revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal rose 2.90% to Rs 4,728.91 crore in January 2015 from Rs 4,595.42 crore in December 2014, mainly due to slightly higher transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in January 2015 was up 5.11% from 46.55 mt in January 2014. Revenues from coal transportation also moved up 25.3% to Rs 4,728.91 crore in January 2015 compared to Rs 3,773.98 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in January 2015 to Rs 10,023.71 crore, up 13.96% compared to Rs 8,795.9 crore earned in January 2104 and also up by 2.54% from Rs 9,775.45 crore earned in December 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic use in January 2015 fell to Rs 739.06 crore, down 1.59% from Rs 751.07 crore in December 2014. However, the quantity of iron ore transported moved up by 10.38% to 10.1 mt in January 2015 as compared to 9.15 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in January 2015 stood at Rs 877.41 crore (9.95 mt) compared to Rs 778.12 crore (9.08 mt) in December 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation rose to Rs 768.11 crore (4.82 mt) in January 2015 from Rs 723.46 crore (4.37 mt) in December 2014.

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in January were down 13.84% to Rs 540.27 crore (4.41 mt) from Rs 627.05 crore (4.86 mt) in December.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in January 2015 stood at Rs 495.99 crore (3.55 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 582.31 crore (3.46 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 446.05 crore (4.07 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 655.5 crore (6.75 mt).
