Railways’ November coal handling up 8.83% m-o-m

December 18: Indian Railways (IR) transported 47.7 million tons (mt) of coal in November 2014, up 8.83% from 46.20 mt handled in October 2014, according to information available with ICMW.

Revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal rose 3.55% to Rs 4,468.05 crore in November 2014 from Rs 4,315 crore in October 2014, mainly due to higher transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in November 2014 was up by 19.52% from 39.91 mt in November 2013. Railways’ revenues from coal transportation also moved up 35.68% to Rs 4,468.05 crore in October 2014 compared to Rs 3,293.18 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in November 2014 to Rs 9,198.67 crore, up 16.73% compared to Rs 7,880.44 crore earned in November 2013 and also up 2.77% from Rs 8,950.69 crore earned in October 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in November 2014 rose to Rs 628 crore, up 4.91% from Rs 598.62 crore in October 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported, moved marginally up 2.15% to 8.56 mt in November compared to 8.38 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in November 2014 stood at Rs 685.43 crore (7.86 mt) compared to Rs 703.94 crore (8.24 mt) in October 2014, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs 704.05 crore (4.28 mt) in November 2014 from Rs 734.05 crore (4.35 mt) in October 2014.

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in November were up 13.29% to Rs 578.72 crore (4.68 mt) from Rs 510.82 crore (4.29 mt) in October.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in November 2014 stood at Rs  488.42 crore (3.56 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 540.16 crore (3.22 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 370.11 crore (3.97 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 544.67 crore (5.96 mt).
