Railways’ Sept coal handling falls 2.26% m-o-m

October 17: Indian Railways (IR) transported 42.45 million tons (mt) of coal in September 2014, down 2.26% from 43.43 mt handled in August 2014, according to information available with ICMW.

However, revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal fell 1.59% to Rs 3,519.49 crore in September 2014 from Rs 3,576.43 crore in August 2014, mainly due to lower transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in September 2014 was up by 6.79% from 39.75 mt in September 2013. The Railways’ revenues from coal transportation moved up 22.71% to Rs 3,519.49 crore in September 2014 compared to Rs 2,868.06 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in September to Rs 7,703.85 crore, up 10.18% compared to Rs 6,992.18 crore earned in September 2013 but down by 2.57% from Rs 7,906.93 crore earned in August 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in September 2014 fell to Rs 564.70 crore, down 7.06% from Rs 607.62 crore in August 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported also fell 9.11% to 8.48 mt in September compared to 9.33 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in September 2014 stood at Rs 690.02 crore (8.97 mt) compared to Rs 627.08 crore (8.14 mt) in August 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 624.78 crore (4.4 mt) in September 2014 from Rs 666.49 crore (4.64 mt) in August 2014.

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in September were up 2.92% to Rs 403.75 crore (4.04 mt) from Rs 392.3 crore (3.82 mt) in August.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in September 2014 stood at Rs 365.9 crore (3.2 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 488.94 crore (3.37 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 385.18 crore (4.23 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 505.02 crore (5.91 mt).
