Re-allocation of Tadicherla coal block set to reduce power woes

12 Jan 2015

The State government’s decision seeking the re-allocation of Tadicherla coal block to the TSGenco to meet the coal requirement

for the upcoming Kakatiya Thermal Power Station (KTPS)-2 in Bhupalapalli of Warangal district has rekindled hopes among the people of Karimnagar district. Three decades ago, the Mineral Exploration Corporation limited (MECL) had conducted survey in the Tadicherla region of Manthani revenue division and identified huge coal blocks by taking up various survey and drilling works. During the period, the naxalites had set fire to the drilling machines of the company in 1989 and 2000. However, in the year 2005 the government had proposed to excavate the coal from the Tadicherla region and sanctioned the Tadicherla block to TSGenco.

The project requires nearly 3,000 acres of land including 572 private lands and 1,432 acres of assigned lands. The Kapuram village of Tadicherla mandal would be completely displaced under the proposed open cast project (OCP). The authorities have provided compensation to the land oustees and the relief and rehabilitation package is pending.

The surveyors have identified C grade quality of coal in the region and its availability from 30 meters depth to 300 meters in four layers. It was also identified availability of 47.93 million tonnes of coal. The OCP was set a target of producing 2.05 million tonnes of coal per annum. The Tadicherla coal block was designated as the captive coal mine for the 600 MWs KTPS-2 in Bhupalapalli of Warangal district.

The excavation of coal from the Tadicherla coal block would benefit the KTPS-2 project and generate power to meet the shortage prevailing in Telangana State.
