December 1: The upward trend witnessed in coal prices in international markets in the second half of November appears to be fading if the tendency on the last working day of the month is any indication, market sources said.
The traders and miners had managed to keep prices up, particularly for South African and Australian steam coal, despite not many enquiries. But a weak trend prevailed on November 28 amidst huge availability of the material and limited enquiries, they said.
South African coal prices (standard) softened by $0.70 per ton during the day as against the previous day while Australian steam coal shed $0.40 per ton, they said.
With buyers, particularly from India, expecting a further weakness in prices, sufficient availability of the material is likely to keep a downward pressure on the overall sentiment, they added
