February 12: Spot prices of South African standard (6,000 Kcal/kg NAR) gained further ground amidst continued restricted deals on February 11, market sources said.
A spurt in futures prices was primarily responsible for the rise in spot rates even as overall deals remained restricted with Chinese buyers still out of the market and Indian companies expecting a softness in prices, they added.
There was little demand from Chinese companies for stocking of coal before the beginning of their Lunar New Year holidays as domestic prices in the country are ruling soft amidst reports of a cut in prices by major domestic miners, they said.
A slight firmness was also witnessed in Australian steam coal prices even as Indonesian rates remained largely stable despite reports of disturbances and heavy rains in some parts of the country which has so far not had any problems with supplies, they added.
Meanwhile, some Indian traders feel, the softness in freight rates is prompting Indian consumers to explore import opportunities from Russia and Colombia though reports of finalisation of any major deals in recent days have not been heard.
