Tighes Hill residents concerned about coal industry

09 Dec 2013

The local Tighes Hill action group says of the more than 200 people already questioned, nearly all want coal trains covered, two thirds are opposed to a proposed fourth coal loader and more than three quarters want a train curfew to reduce noise and vibrations.

Tighes Hill is one of several suburbs along the coal corridor and the group's Charlotte McCabe says locals are worried.

"There's quite a clear response that people definitely want to see some more action on coal dust controls," she said.

"There's 85 per cent of people saying they agree with that and there's also a strong majority of people saying they don't want to see T-4 go ahead and that they're interested in exploring the idea of a train curfew."

Ms McCabe says despite ongoing media attention, many people still have not heard of T-4.

She says all stakeholders need to make sure they are informing the community.

"That has been definitely a topic of discussion that's been raised since we realised how many people don't know about T-4," she said.

"I suppose not everyone is going through the whole newspaper everyday and tuning into the radio every day, not everyone's got time, we've all got busy lives and I also think that some people feel like it's just not their place to have an opinion on these kind of developments, which of course in a democracy is completely is our right."
