‘CIL supplies to power units in Apr-Jul 88% of target’
18 Aug 2014
August 18: Coal India Limited (CIL) supplied a total of 117.70 million tons (mt) of coal to power utilities in the country between April and July 2014, an official said.
“This was 88% of the target of 133.21 mt finalised by the Ministry of Coal as part of the Annual Plan for 2014-15,” the official said.
The monthly average demand and supply of coal from CIL for production of electricity in the current year (2014-15) is 33.30 mt and 29.43 mt (provisional) respectively, the official added.
Meanwhile, as the consumption of coal in India exceeds overall domestic production, the focus of the government is on facilitating increase in domestic production to the extent possible.
Further, CIL has offered all power generating companies drawing coal under fuel supply agreements (FSAs), to lift the coal on “as is where is” basis with the stipulation that they will make their own evacuation arrangement.
This scheme was earlier implemented by the coal companies and has been extended for 2014-15.
All thermal power plants (TPP) holdings FSAs with CIL sources have been asked to lift coal under this scheme by arranging their own logistics for movement of coal offered from various pithead locations, the official said.
