236 Graft Cases Reported in Coal India: Centre

As many as 236 corruption cases have been detected in Coal India Ltd (CIL) and its subsidiaries in the last one year, the Centre informed Parliament on Thursday. The CIL has seven wholly-owned coal producing subsidiary companies.

Of the total cases, 96 corruption incidents were reported during 2014-15 (up till February 28) in Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), which operates coking coal mines in the Jharia & Raniganj Coalfields. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister for Coal Piyush Goyal said major penalty in 17 cases related to BCCL were imposed by the  authority concerned.  In all, 31 corruption cases were reported in Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), in which two major penalties and in eight cases minor penalty was recommended against the erring officials.  And 30 corruption cases were reported in South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) while 20 cases were directly related to the CIL.

According to the Coal Minister, in three cases related to CIL, major penalty was slapped following the investigation. Eighteen cases were reported in Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), 15 in Central Coalfields Ltd Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and 17 cases of corruption were reported in Eastern Coalfields Ltd.
