August 20: A total of 24 power plants out of 122 in the country monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) received coal in excess of their requirements during July 2014, down from 40 plants out of 121 in June, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
A detailed analysis revealed that most of the domestic coal-based power plants had received excess coal than their normal requirement for the month while imported coal-based private sector power utilities like Mundra TPS and Mundra UMPP too had received coal in excess of their requirement.
In July 2014, like the previous couple of months, maximum oversupply was witnessed at Mundra thermal power station (TPS) where coal demand for the month stood at 0.672 mt while supply stood at 1.497 mt, indicating an excess supply of 0.825 mt, as per the data.
Similarly, during June 2014, the maximum volume of oversupply happened at Mundra TPS where coal demand for the month stood at 0.672 mt while supply stood at 1.590 mt, indicating an excess supply of 0.918 mt, as per the data.
In May 2014 too, amongst the power plants, the maximum volume of oversupply happened at Mundra TPS where coal demand for the month stood at 0.672 mt while supply stood at 1.543 mt, indicating an excess supply of 0.871 mt, the data shows.
Coal receipts by thermal power plants include domestic sources (Coal India Ltd and Singareni Collieries Company Ltd), imports and other sources.
