Accusations towards CIL largely unfair: Rao

04 Nov 2013

November 4: The frequent accusations by India’s power utilities and coal consumers against Coal India Ltd (CIL) for not being able to meet domestic coal demand are “largely unfair”, S Narsing Rao, CMD, CIL, said.

Addressing the 39th Coal India Ltd (CIL) Foundation Day in Kolkata on November 1, Rao said CIL does not have control over the entire supply chain as there are various other stakeholders, including the central ministries, state governments, railways etc.

In a number of cases, he said, the state governments showed lacklustre attitude towards expediting forest clearances as well as land acquisition, leading to prolonged delay in upcoming projects.

“There are significant constraints in railways too. The rail connectivity projects for North Karanpura and two other projects are being delayed for years together. A high-level committee has been formed for the purpose…yet we are not confident that it will be done soon.”
