All new power plants to be super-critical from 13th Plan

03 Dec 2014

December 3: All new thermal power units to be set up from the 13th Five-Year Plan will be super-critical thermal power plant or STPPs, D N Prasad, Advisor (Project), Ministry of Coal, said in Kolkata.

“One of the most important policy decisions taken by the government is that in the 12th Five Year Plan, 40% of all new thermal power units will be super-critical units and from the 13th Plan all new power units will be super-critical,” Prasad said while speaking at a CII organised conference.
He added that in 2013-14 the total power generation capacity of India was 254 GW and, out of the coal-based power generation, capacity stood at 153 GW.

Prasad said the Ministry of Coal is taking all the necessary steps and working overtime to ensure adequate supply of coal to the power sector as well as to meet the target of producing 1 billion tons of coal by 2019-20.
