CIL announces Rs 235-crore towards ‘Clean India’

02 Jan 2015

January 2: Coal India Limited (CIL), the single largest coal producing company, has set aside a whopping Rs 235-crore fund, 50% of the company’s total corporate social responsibility (CSR) war chest of Rs 470 crore budgeted for fiscal 2014-15, for providing hygienic sanitation in schools and households of the underprivileged by constructing individual toilet facilities, a company release said.

This was in response to the call given to the corporate sector by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India for the ‘Clean India’ initiative on August 14, 2014.

The amount of Rs 235 crore would be utilised for creating modern sanitation facilities in schools operating in the command areas of CIL’s subsidiary companies and in the villages of economically backward districts which lack sanitation facilities. These will be identified by coal companies through a baseline survey.

CIL’s mining operations are currently in 429 mines spread across 8 states – West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and the north eastern states, the release added.

The company has targeted to complete this drive within March 2015, through engagement of NGO agencies by coal companies.
