Cement shipments decreased in December 2016

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2016 were about 6.0 million t, down by 8.6% from sales in December 2015.
 
The leading producing States for portland and blended cement in December 2016 were Texas, California, Florida, Missouri, and Alabama, in descending order. The leading cement-consuming States (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, and New York, in descending order) received 44% of the December shipments. Sales for the entire year totalled 93.3 million t, up by 1.9% from those in 2015 overall.
 
Clinker production totalled 5.5 million t in December 2016, down by 20% from the output in December 2015. The leading clinker-producing States in December were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama. Production for the year totalled 75.7 million t, down slightly from that for the full year 2015.
 
Masonry cement data for 2015 and 2016 has been revised downward to remove material that was not masonry cement. Masonry cement shipments of about 175 000 t in December 2016 were down by 5.6% from those in December 2015. The leading masonry-cement-consuming States were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, and Georgia; these received about 56% of December’s shipments. Shipments for the year were 2.4 million t, up by 4.65% from total shipments in 2015.
 
December 2016 imports of cement and clinker of about 0.9 million t were 4.1% higher than those in December 2015. Imports for January through December totalled 13.6 million t, up by about 19% from total imports in 2015.
