China’s coking coal imports from all origins plunged by 45.5% on year over January-March to reach 11.3 million tonnes, Mysteel Global calculated based on the latest data from China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) published on April 20. The notable decline had to do with Australia’s absence from the country’s coal market in Q1, according to sources.

 

For March alone, China imported 4.9 million tonnes of coking coal, lower by 13% on year and containing not a single tonne of Australian coal, GACC data showed.
