Coal India’s y-o-y production growth at 9% till Nov 15

20 Nov 2015

India Coal Market Watch

November 19: Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported a 9% growth in coal production to 296.87 million tons (mt) till November 15, 2015-16, compared to the same period last year, according to data available with ICMW.

This, however, is slightly below the 307.17 mt targeted for the period under consideration (April 1 to November 15), shows the data.

In November, production stood at 22.96 mt (till November 15), about 92% of the target. This, however, shows a year-on-year growth of 6.6%. The November performance so far shows a decline in growth if compared with the same period last month (October).

Coal off-take till November 15 was 318.11 mt, below the target of 327.10 mt, but 9.8% higher on an annual basis.

Off-take during the month of November (till November 15) was 22.31 mt, which was 97% of the target of 23.08 mt. The growth in off-take this month has so far been 8.8% year-on-year. This, again, is slower than the 19.1% growth (y-o-y) achieved during the same period last month (October).

Total overburden (OBR) removal till November 15 this year has been 662.86 mn cubic metre (cum), which is higher than the target of 609.67 mn cum. OBR has shown a stupendous growth of 37.1% year-on-year.

In the month of November, CIL achieved 52.16 mn cum of OBR (till November 15), against the target of 45.99 mn cum, the data showed.

CIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Sutirtha Bhattacharya has attributed the jump in production in 2015-16 to the high growth in OBR, saying that the latter would ensure continued growth in output.
