Coal stock continues to vanish from thermal plants of Madhya Pradesh

14 Oct 2014

Fortnight after TOI exposed how 23,000 metric tonnes of coal went missing from Amarkantak and Sanjay Gandhi thermal plants between June and August, investigations show another 5,000 metric tonnes of coal vanished from both plants in September.

Documents with TOI show on September 30, closing coal stock was 93758.18 and 60416.74 metric tonnes at Amarkantak and Sanjay Gandhi plants respectively. But opening stock for October 1 shows only 91,554 and 57,750 metric tonne of coal stock at Amarkantak and Sanjay Gandhi thermal plants.

The gap between closing stock on September 30 and opening stock on October 1 comes out to be 2204.18 and 2666.74 metric tonne respectively. Thus, cumulatively around 4870 metric tonne coal has again gone missing.

In past four months no such discrepancies in closing and opening stocks of other two power plants — Satpura and Shri Singhaji — have been found. Genco officials attribute this to monthly physical verification of coal. "Stacking and other losses incurred on daily basis are adjusted once a month. So the figure looks big," an official said. But, such losses are not reported at Satpura and Singaji power plants even though Satpura has more units than Amarkantak and consumes more coal. Officials of Madhya Pradesh Power Generation Company could not be contacted to comment over the issue, despite attempts by TOI.
