Coal stocks at 103 power plants up 8.18%

October 31: Coal stocks at 103 thermal power plants (TPS) in India rose by almost 8.18% as on October 28 compared to that recorded on October 15, 2014, mainly due to slightly improved supplies of imported as well as domestic coals from Coal India Ltd (CIL), according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at the 103 TPS stood at 7.68 million tons (mt) on October 28, up from 7.099 mt recorded on October 15, 2014, data showed.

However, compared to 8.299 mt of coal stocks recorded a month ago on September 29 at 104 power plants, coal stocks at the 103 power plants as on October 28 are found to have decreased by 7.46%.

However, in terms of days, coal stocks stood at 5 days on October 28, October 15 as well as on September 29, data revealed.

The stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 0.842 mt and 6.841 mt respectively on October 28 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 0.690 mt and 6.409 mt respectively on October 15.

On the other hand, stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 0.657 mt and 7.642 mt, respectively on September 29.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 62 on October 28 as compared to 64 plants facing a similar fate on October 15. On September 29, this stood at 56, as per data made available by CEA.

The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days also stood at 36 on October 28 and on October 15, while 33 plants faced a similar situation on September 29.
