May 7: Stocks of coal at power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) rose very close to 30 million tons (mt) as on May 5, 2015, largely on account of higher domestic production and comparatively low demand for electricity in the country.
The stocks of coal at the 100 TPS stood at 29.958 mt on May 5, 2015, up from 29.821 mt on April 28, 2015, 26.803 mt on April 5, 2015 and 17.640 mt on April 5, 2014.
Stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 3.741 mt and 26.217 mt respectively on May 5, at 3.597 mt and 26.224 mt respectively on April 28, 2.787 mt and 24.016 mt on April 5, 2015 and at 1.319 mt and 16.321 mt respectively on April 5, 2014.
In terms of days, stocks of coal on May 5, April 28 and April 5, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 21, 20 and 18 days respectively, while on May 5, 2014, the stocks were sufficient to run the plants for 13 days.
The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 5 on May 5, 2015 while the figure was at 6, 12 and 22 respectively on April 28, 2015, April 5, 2015 and May 5, 2014.
The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days stood at 3 on May 5, 2015, while the figure was at 3, 5 and 12 days respectively on April 28, 2015, April 5, 2015 and May 5, 2014.
