Coking coal imports via Chennai at mere 76 tons in Oct

November 27: Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai were at a mere 76 tons in October 2014 against 167 tons in September, as per provisional information available with ICMW.

In October, a single consignment arrived from the UK at a unit price of 29,717 ($477) per ton.

In September all the consignments arrived from the UK in a range of Rs 29,717 – Rs 29,732 ($481-487) per ton.

It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
