Faulty transformers costing power sector Rs 200k cr: ITMA

06 Jun 2014

June 6: The Indian power sector is suffering losses amounting to more than Rs 200,000 crore in the form of transmission and distribution (T&D) losses, mainly due to the use of faulty transformers, according to the Indian Transformer Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA).

“As on date, the power sector is suffering T&D losses of more than Rs 200,000 crore. This is primarily due to faulty transformers,” B Lal, Director General of ITMA, said.

“This is only the quantifiable loss. Besides, there is inconvenience to people and the Defence sector which cannot be quantified,” he added.

Lal said the poor quality of materials used in transformers also increases the maintenance cost significantly. “The maintenance cost is almost five times for the poor quality transformers which have a lifespan of not more than three-four years,” he said.

Stressing on the use of quality materials, he said, by only using the right quality transformers the power sector can significantly reduce its huge T&D losses in the country.
