Govt should open up coal sector forthwith: Former coal secy

March 10: In the national interest, the Indian government should open up the coal sector as soon as possible, according to former coal secretary P C Parakh.
"India should have opened up the coal sector to commercial mining to Indian and foreign companies long back – when it had opened up the power sector," Parakh told Coal Insights, a sister publication of ICMW.
He further said that captive mining was a flawed policy and lack of transparency in block allocations caused significant damage to the government's image.
As a remedial step, "the government should open up the sector as soon as it can," he suggested.
