India’s February coal output down 4.40% m-o-m

India’s coal production in February 2016 edged down 4.40% to 60.12 million tons (mt) as against 62.89 mt in January 2016, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

The m-o-m decline in production was largely due to lesser number of working days in February as compared to January.

The production in February 2016 was 3.05% higher compared to 58.34 mt produced in February 2015. The y-o-y increase in production was largely on account of 29 working days in February this year as against 28 days last year.

The actual production during the month was 7.78% lower than the target of 65.19 mt, mainly due to lower-than-targeted production by Coal India Ltd and captive coal mines.

The country’s coal production during the first 11 months (April-February) of the current fiscal (2015-16) stood at 568.74 mt, up 5.12% from 541.02 mt recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal, and 9.41% lower than the target of 562.64 mt set for the period.
