September 29: India’s coking coal production in August 2014 increased 4.27% to 4.40 million tons (mt) against 4.22 mt produced in the same month of 2013, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
On a month-on-month basis, coking coal production in August increased 10.83% from 3.97 mt in July, data revealed.
Production targets for the month of August 2014, as well as that for fiscal 2014-15, however, were not available.
In the first five months of the current financial year of 2014-15, India’s coking coal production stood at 23.16 mt, up 6.09% from 21.83 mt recorded in the same period of the last fiscal (2013-14).
Higher coking coal production in August 2014 could be attributed to an increase in coking coal output by Coal India Limited (CIL) during the month compared to that in July 2014.
During August, CIL’s coking coal production stood at 3.85 mt from 3.58 mt in the same month a year ago. CIL’s coking coal production in July stood at 3.54 mt. In June, production of the same stood at 3.82 mt. In May, coking coal production by CIL was at 3.92 mt while the same was 3.73 mt in April 2014. CIL’s coking coal production in July 2013 was at 3.66 mt.
