March 2: Imports of steam coal by Indian power utilities during the first 10 months (April-January) of 2014-15 increased 18.09% to 77.522 million tons (mt) compared to 65.644 mt recorded during the corresponding period of 2013-14, according to provisional data compiled by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and available to ICMW.
A weak trend in international coal prices appears to have encouraged imported coal- based utilities to go in for higher imports, industry experts believe.
Of the total imports during the period, 36.889 mt was brought by imported coal-based power plants, up 8.22% from 34.085 mt imported in the same period of the previous year.
However, imports by domestic coal-based power plants, which use imported coal for blending, also rose 19.57% to 40.232 mt from 33.646 mt in the same period of last year.
In January 2015, imports by power utilities touched 8.262 mt, a drop of 2.78% when compared to 8.499 mt imported in December 2014.
However, imports rose 34.53% in January 2015 when compared to 6.141 mt in January 2014.
Imports in December 2014 were the highest so far in 2014-15 at 8.499 mt.
Volumes brought into India by imported-coal based utilities during January 2015, however, were the highest, at 4.552 mt.
