Indian power utilities’ coal imports in December 2015 stood at 7.44 million tons (mt), up a sharp 19.42% month-on-month compared to 6.23 mt imported in November, according to provisional data from CEA available with ICMW.
However, on a year-on-year basis, the imports in December this year were down 17.33% from 9.00 mt (revised) imported in the same month in 2014, according to data.
The power utilities’ total coal imports during the first nine months (April-December) of 2015-16 declined by 10.87% to 61.73 mt from 69.26 mt seen during the same period in 2014-15.
The December figures seem to have reversed a trend of lower imports on account of higher availability of domestic coal and lower-than-expected growth in demand for electricity from distribution companies (discoms) due to their poor financial condition.
This could be due to the fact that international coal prices are scraping the bottom of the barrel, making the overseas variety more viable for end-users compared to domestic coal.
In fact, earlier, in view of the increased availability of domestic coal, the CEA had reduced the coal import target for all utilities to 84 mt for 2015-16 from the previous 115 mt. The coal import target for the utilities in 2014-15 had stood at 96 mt.
