Spot prices of Indonesian coals remained largely unchanged on February 25 on mismatch in offers and bids while South African- as well as Australian-origin coals firmed up in anticipation of higher enquiries as uncertainty over the strike at Carrejon continues, market sources said.
In recent weeks, a number of Indian companies were believed to have purchased Columbian coal as the landed prices at present are extremely competitive compared to other-origin coals of similar specs.
Industry sources claimed that Columbian coal (6,000 Kcal/kg NAR) is being offered at about $50 per ton CFR India, which is extremely competitive compared to South African coal or Australian coals.
“If the unions at Carrejon indeed vote to go ahead with the strike, there is a possibility of supplies coming down to the extent of about 100,000 tons per day and this might prompt existing buyers of Columbian coal to move to South African or Australian coal and thus offers for the latter have firmed up in recent days,” an official from a trading company said.
