11 Aug 2014
August 11: Kamarajar Ports Limited (KPL), formerly Ennore Port, plans to increase the draught capacity of Chettinad International Coal Terminal to 16 metres from the present 13.5 metres and that of two other coal berths (Berth-I and Berth – II) by 1 metre each at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
A report said that KPL has asked the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) to provide deeper draught at three coal berths to accommodate bigger vessels.
The dredging work is likely to commence soon and would be completed in six months, the report said.
DCI had already deepened the approach channel and basin to the berth by 16 metres.
The Ministry of Shipping recently came out with a directive that all major ports of the country should have a draught of 18 metres.
