Kibo appoint Tractebel for Mbeya power study

11 Nov 2015

Tanzania-focused mineral exploration and development company, Kibo Mining, has engaged Engie subsidiary, Tractebel Engineering, to conduct the definitive feasibility study on the power component of the Mbeya coal-to-power project (MCPP). Work on the definitive feasibility study will start immediately.

"The appointment of Tractebel marks a major strategic breakthrough in the development of the MCPP,” said Louis Coetzee, CEO of Kibo Mining. “Tractebel has one of the best international reputations for the development and construction of power facilities like the MCPP.”

The MCPP is located in southwestern Tanzania. It comprises a coal mine and a 250 – 300 MW mine mouth power plant that will help to reduce the country’s power deficit. Tanzania currently has less than 1 GW of operation power generation capacity, leaving the country well short of 2 GW it currently requires.

“The MCPP will benefit immensely from the wealth of experience and knowledge in Tractebel,” continued Coetzee. “The […] also completes the process of providing Kibo with adequate capacity to develop, construct and commission the MCPP. The MCPP now has the benefit of reputable capabilities in the form of MinXcon to complete mining feasibility work, Tractebel to complete the feasibility studies on the power plant, SEPCO III as preferred EPC contractor and Standard Bank as financial adviser."
