Last House session today; will Insurance, Coal Bills be passed?

23 Dec 2014

The row over religious conversion is expected to disrupt last day of Winter Session of Parliament on Tuesday as the Insurance and Coal Bills continue to be in limbo.

On Monday, both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments over various issues like religious conversion and black money.

Clearing the air on the contentious conversion row, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said neither the government nor the Bharatiya Janata Party was involved in such acts and the state governments should take action if anyone violates the law.

The Opposition in Rajya Sabha, where the Narendra Modi-led BJP is in minority, has been at the forefront staging strong protests against the government over issues like religious conversion and the remarks made by Sadhvi Niranjan and Sakshi Maharaj.

The Lok Sabha debated the conversion issue last week, and Naidu had replied to the debate.

The Trinamool Congress, Left and the Congress have been repeatedly attacking the Central government, insisting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in the house on conversions.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed interruptions during 15 of the 19 sittings, losing 44 hours and 9 minutes till December 19.

The Insurance Bill, which provides for raising FDI cap from 26 percent to 49 percent, could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha due to disruptions even though it was listed on four days last week.
