MCL boosted CIL’s October production growth

13 Nov 2014

November 13: A sharp rise in production by Coal India Ltd (CIL) was largely on account of increased contribution by its subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), an official from CIL told ICMW.

Production at CIL in October 2014 stood at 40.20 million tons (mt), up 14.76% from 35.03 mt in October 2013, and slightly higher compared to the target of 39.74 mt for the month of October this year, according to provisional data released by the company.

On a month-on-month basis too, the company’s output grew 15.25% compared to 34.88 mt produced in September 2014.

“MCL had done extremely well in October and that was the primary reason for CIL registering over 14% growth in production during the month,” the official said.

“Not only there was less law and order related issue at Talcher in MCL’s command area in October compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the subsidiaries’ production increased too on account of the upcoming MDO at Bhubanewari, which started during the month,” the official said.

In October 2013, there was a huge law and order problem at MCL, the official said.

MCL had produced a total of 10.24 mt coal in October 2014, as against only 8.24 mt in the corresponding month of 2013, reflecting a growth of 24.27%.

The company’s off-take too increased to 10.30 mt during the month, reflecting a growth of nearly 20% as against 8.60 mt despatched during the same month of the previous year, according to data available with ICMW.

Meanwhile, other subsidiaries too have come out with impressive production performance so far during the seven months of the current financial year with SECL showing a growth of 9.8%, CCL a growth of 9.5%, BCCL registering a growth of 6.2% and ECL reporting a growth of 5.8% that helped CIL record an overall growth of 6.7% at 250.96 mt over 235.03 mt produced during the corresponding period of 2013-14.

ECL’s performance was boosted because of good production levels at Rajmahal after introduction of the MDO while CCL’s performance was boosted by the upcoming Amrapali project.

“These are new projects where production was nil in the previous year,” the official added.
