Major ports’ traffic handling up 5% to 581.34 mt

21 Dec 2015

India Coal Market Watch

December 18: Total traffic handling through the major ports increased 4.65% to 581.34 million tons (mt) in 2014-15 from 555.49 mt in 2013-14, Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of States, Shipping, informed the Lok Sabha through a written reply.

However, it seems that capacity utilisation showed a decreasing trend over time because though traffic handling increased, capacity did not increase in proportion.

 Capacity utilisation was 66.70% in 2014-15, 69.39% in 2013-14 and 73.26% in 2012-13.

Kandla was the top performer in terms of traffic handling. The traffic volume increased 6.32% to 92.50 mt in 2014-15 from 87.00 mt.

The port-wise traffic handled and capacity available at major ports during the last 3 years is given below:

The Minister of State said the major ports are experiencing heavy traffic because the government has taken several measures for their development and expansion measures.

The measures includes construction of new berths, upgradation of existing berths, mechanisation of berths, installation of state-of-the-art equipment, mechanisation of cargo handling systems, dredging of navigation channels and berths to accommodate large vessels.
