Mamata Banerjee unveils DeochaPachami coal block

19 Jan 2016

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today unveiled Bengal Birbhum Coalfields Ltd (BBCL), a special purpose vehicle created to develop India's largest coal mining project in DeochaPachami in Birbhum district.

Banerjee claimed the block will produce coal worth Rs 2.10 lakh crore and would attract an investment of Rs 22,000 crore, fueling changes in the economical dynamics of Birbhum and adjoining districts of the state. The Chief Minister said though the block had been offered jointly to West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL), her state was leading the project.

The logo of BBCL has been designed by Banerjee herself. Deocha Pachami coal block is the largest coal block in the country with 2,102 million tonne of coal in reserve. Banerjee, however, did not talk about the land acquisition for the mining and rehabilitation for the pet project. West Bengal will get the largest share of coal with 584 million tonne from the block, followed by Bihar with a share of 486 million tonne. The SPV will develop India's largest coal mine in DeochaPachami by appointing a Mine Developer cum Operator, the CM added.
