08 May 2015

May 8: Multipurpose berth projects at various major ports are likely to be completed by January 2019, according to data furnished by Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of State, Ministry of Shipping in a, written reply in the Lok Sabha on May 7.

“These projects will enhance the capacity of respective ports to handle a variety of cargoes and meet the requirement of the trade. This will also help in reducing the pre-berthing detention and turn-round time of vessels at these ports,” said an official statement.

However, among six projects undertaken by the government in this purpose, only the project at Vizag Port has been completed so far.

The project at New Mangalore Port is expected to be completed in March 2016, Kamarajar Port in May 2017 and Paradip Port in March 2018.
