Mumbai Port cargo handling up 1.7% in April-February y-o-y

21 Mar 2014

March 21: Cargo handling by Mumbai Port increased by 1.7% during the first 11 months of the current financial year to 53.90 million tons (mt) from 53 mt in the same period of 2012-13, a senior official from the port told ICMW.

"The total volume of cargo handling pushed up mainly due to higher volumes of imported coal, trans-shipment cargoes (mainly steel cargoes for JSW headed for Dharamtar Port), crude oil, cement and steel export," the official said.

According to the official, during the period under review, crude oil was the highest contributor to the total cargo growth with a 1 mt increase y-o-y, followed by imported coal which increased by around 0.4 mt y-o-y, and a marginal increase in cement and export of steel.

With this, Mumbai Port became one of the few major ports that registered growth in cargo handling for the first 11 months of 2013-14 compared to the same period of 2012-13.
