NTPC floats another 5-mt imported coal tender

08 Oct 2014

October 8: NTPC Ltd has floated four separate tenders inviting offers from suppliers to procure a total of 5 million tons (mt) of imported steam coal for its 12 power plants.

The company will sell the tender documents till October 14 and interested parties will be able to submit their offers till October 31 while the delivery has to be completed on FOR basis within four months of placement of the order.

This is the second tender floated by the company after the one floated at the beginning of September to procure a similar quantity of coal for its 12 power plants through e-tendering and reverse auction.

The e-tender was floated after the company scrapped a manual tender which was floated in July this year.

Through the latest tender, NTPC is looking to procure coal with GCV (ADB) of 5,300-5,800 Kcal/kg, moisture content of 32%, ash content of 20% and sulphur content of 1%.

Of the total four tenders, one is for 1.30 mt of imported coal for its Ramagundam and Simhadri power plants in Andhra Pradesh, the second is also for 1.30 mt for Dadri, Unchahar, Sipat, Korba, and Mouda plants.

The third tender is for 0.80 mt of imported coal for Rihand and Vindhyachal power plants whereas the fourth, for 1.60 mt of imported coal, is for the Talcher Kaniha, Farakka and Kahalgaon plants.

In the e-tenders, which are yet to be finalised as the last date for submission of bids is October 8, 2014, the company was looking to procure 1.6 mt of coal for its Ramagundam and Simhadri plants, 0.9 mt coal for Dadri, Sipat and Mouda plants, 0.7 mt of imported coal for Rihand and Vindhyachal plants while 1.8 mt was for Talcher Kaniha, Farakka and Kahalgaon plants.

NTPC has been given a target by the Ministry of Power to import 16.60 mt of steam coal in 2014-15.

According to information available with ICMW, the company had imported a total of 5.365 mt between April and August 2014.

Considering the fact that NTPC is yet to place the order for a 5 mt e-tender and has just floated a tender for another 5 mt, it looks slightly uncertain whether the company will be able to get delivery of the entire 10 mt of imported coal by March 2015.
