New CIL CMD may assume charge next week

31 Dec 2014

December 31, 2014: Sutirtha Bhattacharya, the new Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Ltd (CIL), is expected to take charge next week, a company spokesperson said.

“The new CMD is expected to assume charge next week. Earlier, he was expected to join on December 30-31. But now we expect him to take over on or around January 5," the spokesperson told ICMW.

Bhattacharya, a senior IAS officer, held the post of CMD, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), since 2012. He was selected by the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PSEB) as the new CMD of CIL in November 2014.

He was relieved from his duties by the Telengana government on December 30 and will be released on January 1.

At CIL, Bhattacharya will succeed the last full-time CMD of the company, S Narsing Rao, who was also his predecessor at SCCL. Rao relinquished his position at CIL in May 2014 to join the secretariat of the newly formed Telengana government.

Currently, Coal Ministry Additional Secretary A K Dubey is handling additional responsibility as CMD of CIL.
