New Mangalore Port to hike coal handling capacity by 6.6 mt

07 Oct 2013

October 7: New Mangalore Port trust(NMPT), one of the leading ports of India, aims to increase its coal handling capacity by almost 6.6 million tons (mt) to 18.2 mt in next three years, a port official told ICMW.

"The present coal handling capacity of the port is 11.6 mt per annum and the projected capacity is expected to reach 18.2 million tons by 2016-17," he added.

The official said the consistent increase in coal cargo handling through NMPT is due to the timely measures taken by the port, such as commissioning of berth No.14 with 14 meters draft, deployment of mobile harbour cranes with 104 tons capacity, allotting adequate space for stacking cargo etc.

"Enhancing the railway network is also one of the main features which has contributed to the increase in coal handling by the port," he added.
