No blackout, says Goyal; 20 power plants have coal for 4 days

13 Jun 2014

Seeking to allay apprehensions of a blackout in northern region, Power Minister Piyush Goyal today said the government is making all arrangements for ensuring adequate coal supply to power plants, even as 20 thermal plants have fuel stocks enough for four days only.

The power crisis is a national problem but power plants will not shut, Goyal said replying to queries by reporters whether the coal situation could lead to a blackout in the northern region.

"The government is making adequate arrangements for coal supply," he added.

As per the latest Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report, 20 power stations have fuel stocks that will last four days only.

Besides, 38 other stations have less than seven days of stock.

In the northern states of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and J&K, three power stations have stock to last four days only.

In western states of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, 10 plants are left with less than four days of coal.

Three power stations in the southern region -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala -- have less than 4 days of the fuel .

Four power projects in the eastern states -- Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand -- have less than four days of fuel.

Meanwhile, Goyal today also met the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
