Ports’ cargo handling capacity may rise to 3,130 mt by FY20

11 Dec 2014

December 11: The cargo handling capacity of Indian ports is expected to rise to 3,130 million tons (mt) by 2019-20 as per the perspective plan for development of the maritime sector, Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan has said.

The perspective plan - Maritime Agenda (2010-2020)- has estimated traffic projections and capacity additions at the ports up to the year 2020 and based on the estimated growth, it has projected capacity of 3,130 mt by 2019-20, the minister said.

Meanwhile, in order to expand the capacity of ports, the government has allowed 100% FDI under the automatic route for port development besides offering income-tax incentives, he said.

“As a result of the initiatives taken by the government, 62 projects, with a capacity of 354.32 mt, have been awarded under major ports during the last two years,” Radhakrishnan said.
