May 8: West Bengal could be reducing power tariffs within a couple of years.
Speaking at a seminar on Vision for an Efficient Power Sector, organised by the MCC Chamber of Commerce & Industry, West Bengal Power Minister Manish Gupta said, at this point in time, the cost of coal would be coming down because once the state puts the captive power plants in operation it would able to buy coal at a lesser price because the fuel would be owned by the state.
Previously, the state had to buy coal from an agency. Gupta said: “Now, as we are getting coal at a lesser cost, the cost of power generation would also go down. If we can maintain parity for a couple of years, it could be possible for bring down the rates.”
