Railways’ coal handling up 3.22% m-o-m in July

August 19: Indian Railways (IR) transported 42.91 million tons (mt) of coal in July 2014, up 3.22% from 41.57 mt in June 2014, according to information available with ICMW.
However, revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal fell 1.73% to Rs 3,471.90 crore in July 2014 from Rs 3,533.04 crore in June 2014, mainly due to lower transportation of the fossil fuel.
Compared to last year, transportation of coal in July 2014 was slightly up by 1.29% from 42.36 mt in July 2013. However, the Railways’ revenues from coal transportation moved up 14.83% to Rs 3,471.90 crore in July 2014 compared to Rs 3,023.64 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in July to Rs 7,909.35 crore, up 14.72% compared to Rs 6,894.61 crore earned in July 2013 but down by 2.79% from Rs 8,136.70 crore earned in June 2014.
Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in July 2014 fell to Rs 626.06 crore, down 10.61% from Rs 700.40 crore in June 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported also fell 1.82% to 9.73 mt in July compared to 9.91 mt in the previous month.
Revenues from transportation of cement in July 2014 stood at Rs 747.92 crore (9.78 mt) compared to Rs 760.14 crore (9.25 mt) in June 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 649.59 crore (4.64 mt) in July 2014 from Rs 696.75 crore (4.57 mt) in June 2014.
The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in July fell sharply by 5.89% to Rs 396.82 crore (3.96 mt) from Rs 421.70 crore (3.84 mt) in June.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in July 2014 stood at Rs 491.36 crore (3.81 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 471.38 crore (3.13 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 398.53 crore (4.25 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 530.41 crore (6.36 mt).
