August 18: Indian Railways has reduced its on-roll employee strength by 0.33 million during the 22-year period between April 1, 1992 and April 1, 2014, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha has said.
The total on-roll strength at Railways, as on April 1, 1992 was 1.65 million and the on-roll strength as on April 1, 2014 was 1.32 million (provisional), Sinha said.
He said the on-roll strength was gradually reduced to 1.58 million in 1997-98, to 1.38 million in 2003-04 and further to 1.32 million in 2009-10.
This meant there was no change in on-roll strength between 2009-10 and 2013-14.
“There has been significant increase in the percentage of staff costs’ share in working expenses after implementation of the government’s decision on the recommendation of the VI Central Pay Commission and the major challenge of the coming years would be to substantially improve employee level productivity,” Sinha said in Parliament recently.
