Railways laid 55,000 km rail lines since 1951

18 Aug 2014

August 18: Indian Railways expanded its network and executed a large number of capacity enhancement works during the past 63 years, junior Railway Minister Manoj Sinha said.

“Since 1951, the railway network expansion work of more than 55,000 kilometres (km) has been completed,” Sinha said in Parliament.

Of the total 55,000 km railway network expanded during the period, 15,076 km comprised new lines, 22,667 km consisted of gauge conversion and 17,871 km involved doubling of tracks, the minister said.

Sinha said, as of date, the country has a railway network spread over 115,833.14 km, including 105,701.24 km of broad gauge (BG), 7,553.41 km metre gauge (MG) and 2,578.49 km of narrow gauge (NG).

He further stated that Uttar Pradesh has the largest network of railway lines of 14,943.12 km, while Maharashtra stood second with a network of 10,928.10 km and West Bengal occupying third rank with a network of 10,325.38 km.
