S Africa’s coal exports rise for 2 consecutive months

October 7: After registering a month-on-month rise of 15.13% in August, total coal exports through South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) increased in September as well on the back of higher exports to Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) countries, according to data made available to ICMW by one of the promoters of the terminal.
Exports in September rose 7.27% to 6,695,949 tons from 6,242,109 tons in August.
Exports during the month were higher by more than 20% from 5,572,670 tons exported in September 2013.
Exports to ARA countries in September 2014 surged by 259% to 1,792,184 tons as compared to only 499,024 tons exported in August 2014 even as exports to Asian countries, other than India, fell sharply during the month.
Despite the increase in exports registered in August and September, exports of coal through RBCT during the first nine months of 2014 stood at 49,786,993 tons, down marginally from 49,907,974 tons exported during the corresponding period of 2013.
