December 02: After turning soft on November 28, the prices of South African steam coal fell further on December 1 on lack of new buying support, market sources said.
ICMW had reported on December 1 that the upward trend witnessed in coal prices in international markets in the second half of November appears to be fading if the trend on the last working day of the month was any indication.
The price of standard South African coal (6000 Kcal NAR) fell by another $0.85 on December 1 on the back of $0.70 decline registered on November 28 whereas off-spec (5500 Kcal NAR) material prices slipped by $1.50 per ton taking a cue from softness in Australian steam coal prices of same specification.
With buyers, particularly from India, expecting further weakness in prices, sufficient availability of the material is likely to keep a downward pressure in overall sentiment, they added
