Steam coal imports via Mundra up 20.35% in September m-o-m

October 17: Steam coal imports through the port of Mundra rose 20.35% to 1,874,107 tons in September 2013, from 1,557,091 tons in August 2013, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

There was also a significant increase of steam coal imports through Mundra on a y-o-y basis. Steam coal import through Mundra increased 93% to 1,874,107 tons in September 2013 compared to 972,281 tons in the same month last year (2012).

The import of steam coal in the first half(April-September)of 2013-14 stood 10,773,284 tons against 4,305,575 tons recorded in the same period in the previous financial year.

Following is the monthly break-up of steam coal imports via Mundra in 2012-13 and 2013-14 (in tons):

In September 2013, 1,822,553 tons came from Indonesia at a price range of Rs 2,436-Rs Rs 5,591($36-$83) per ton while 51,554 tons came from South Africa at a price range of Rs5, 228-Rs 5,588 ($82-$86) per ton.

There has been a significant reduction from the coal imported from South Africa in September. Steam coal import from the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) have reduced 69.23% to 51,554 tons in September 2013,compared to 167,500 imported in August this year mainly because of its high price compared to Indonesian coal.

In August 2013, 1,389,591 tons came from Indonesia at a price range of Rs 2,251-Rs 5,319 ($34-$81) per ton while 167,500 tons came from South Africa at a price range of Rs 5,124-Rs 5,279 ($83-$85) per ton.
