Submit expense on coal import: HC to Genco

12 Feb 2015

Concerned over high cost of coal import, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the Mahagenco to submit a detailed expenditure on freight charges incurred while importing coal, within four weeks. The power utility was also asked to inform about sampling methodology at loading and unloading points.

The court was hearing a PIL by Anil Wadpalliwar, through his counsel Shrirang Bhandarkar, alleging that due to the ongoing tussle between WCL and Mahagenco, consumers are unnecessarily forced to shell out more for power supply. He claimed that the steep hike in power generation cost is due to short supply of domestic coal and import of costly coal.

Bhandarkar pointed out there was a big cartel in importing coal from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nicaragua where freight rates are inflated to illegally claim huge profit margins. He said the entire process cost 10 times more than importing coal from the domestic market.

HC seeks details of steps for swine flu

Peeved over alarming rise in swine flu cases in the city, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Wednesday sought details from the NMC on steps taken to control it. The directives came while hearing an application filed by social worker Anil Agre.

The petitioner strongly contended that the city's government hospitals lack adequate facilities to detect swine flu cases and poor people are the ultimate sufferers as they can't afford costly treatment at private hospitals. Claiming inaction of civic officials, the petitioner said the deadly disease spread like a wildfire and has taken the form of an epidemic.
